It’s a story of internet love gone awry. She was a 49-year old dental hygienist from Beaverton, OR. He was a 69-year-old retired dentist living in Portland. They met on eHarmony, had a date, smoked a little pot and then they had unprotected sex. And like so many love stories, this is where things start to get ugly.

Jilted Lover Pulls Out All of Her Ex’s Teeth

It’s always awkward when you see your ex’s out in public – especially if it ends badly. Polish dentist Anna Mackowiak had just broken up with her boyfriend when just days later he showed up at her practice complaining of a tooth ache. She started out with the best of intentions (don’t we all) but in the end wound up pulling out every single last one of his teeth while he lay there passed out in her chair. Oops!

12 Frightening Instances of People Impersonating Dentists

Most people take for granted that their dentist is competent — and has gone through the proper legal channels to certify this fact — but as the examples below indicate, there is a disturbingly large number of individuals in the US practicing dentistry without a license. In some cases, they were dentists in other decades or in other countries and never made the transition to the here and now. In other cases, they are dental assistants who can’t wait to become full-fledged dentists and end up jumping the gun. And in some cases, they’re just wackos with a tooth fetish. Whatever the fake dentists’ backstory, though, they primarily seem to take advantage of the poor and the uninsured looking for a good deal on dental work. But as these stories show, you generally get what you pay for. If you want to verify your dentist’s license, by the way, here’s a handy list of state dental boards.

Wearing Gloves Does Not Mean a Sterile Medical Environment

Just because your dentist is wearing gloves does not mean that his hands are clean. In fact, a recent study in the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology concluded that just the opposite is true.

The study looked at more than 7,000 doctor-patient interactions in 56 wards across 15 hospitals in England and Wales and found that health care workers wore gloves in roughly a quarter of all contacts with patients, and in 60 percent of those cases did not clean their hands either before or after treating the patient. This is disquieting because germs can travel through latex and are often worn when doctors are treating the sickest, most infectious patients. Furthermore, when the gloves are removed sometimes what’s known as a “back spray” effect can occur in which the germs are snapped back onto the wearer’s person by the pliant rubber protection.

Japan’s New Fad: Terrible Teeth

Did your parents spend thousands of dollars on orthodontics to make your smile straight and fashionable? Well don’t you feel foolish now. Turns out the new big fad (in Japan at least) is crooked teeth.

A Ginza based dentist named Salon Plaisir glues on what’s called Tsuke-yaeba — or Stick-on Crooked Teeth. The prevailing theory over there is that most men find women with too few flaws unattainable thus scaring away potential suitors. The imperfect gnashers make women just the right amount of fucked up to be snaggable. Kinda like Tina Fey.

Uninsured Man Dies from Toothache

Unemployed, without insurance and unable to afford to have his wisdom teeth pulled Kyle Willis was given two prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medications and sent home. The 24-year-old father couldn’t afford both so he chose the pain medicine and left. The tooth infection spread causing his brain to swell and he died shortly after. Willis joins a long line of American horror stories illustrating how not having health insurance in America can be tantamount to a death sentence.
